Per sostituire correttamente una lampadina tradizionale con una LED, bisogna considerare tre fattori: l'attacco (E27, E14, GU10, R7S, ecc.), i lumen (luminosità, non i watt) e la temperatura di colore. Come riferimento: una incandescente da 40W equivale a una LED da 5-6W (470 lumen), una da 60W a una LED da 8-10W (806 lumen), una da 100W a una LED da 13-15W (1.521 lumen). Verificare sempre che le dimensioni fisiche della lampadina LED siano compatibili con il portalampada esistente.
Le lampadine LED R7S sono progettate per sostituire le lampadine alogene lineari con attacco R7S, molto diffuse nelle lampade da terra a stelo (come le classiche a "piantana"), nelle applique da parete e nei faretti da esterno. Sono disponibili nelle misure standard di 78mm e 118mm. La sostituzione con LED consente un risparmio energetico fino all'85%: una alogena R7S da 300W può essere sostituita con una LED R7S da 30-40W mantenendo una luminosità equivalente. Si riconoscono dalla loro forma lineare (a tubo) con due contatti metallici situati esattamente alle estremità opposte.
Non tutte le lampadine LED sono dimmerabili. Solo i modelli specificamente indicati come "dimmerabili" sulla confezione possono essere utilizzati con un variatore di luce. Inoltre, è necessario che il dimmer sia compatibile con la tecnologia LED (i vecchi dimmer per incandescenza spesso causano sfarfallio con i LED). Se si desidera la funzione di regolazione della luminosità, verificare sempre la compatibilità sia della lampadina che del dimmer.
Le lampadine LED durano mediamente 15.000-25.000 ore, contro le 1.000 ore delle incandescenti e le 2.000-4.000 ore delle alogene. Una lampadina LED usata 4 ore al giorno dura oltre 10 anni. Il risparmio economico è concreto: una LED da 10W che sostituisce una incandescente da 60W, usata 4 ore al giorno, fa risparmiare circa 12-15 euro all'anno sulla bolletta. Considerando anche la minore frequenza di sostituzione, l'investimento iniziale si ripaga in pochi mesi.
I gradi Kelvin indicano la temperatura di colore della luce emessa. 2700K corrisponde a una luce bianca calda, simile alle vecchie lampadine a incandescenza, ideale per ambienti domestici e relax. 4000K è una luce bianca naturale, perfetta per cucine, bagni e uffici. 6000K è una luce bianca fredda, adatta ad ambienti di lavoro e commerciali. Per uso domestico la scelta più comune è 2700-3000K, che crea un'atmosfera accogliente simile alle lampadine tradizionali.
No, le lampadine LED non emettono quantità significative di raggi UV né infrarossi. Questo le rende ideali per l'illuminazione di opere d'arte, tessuti, alimenti e prodotti sensibili alla luce, che con le lampade tradizionali tendono a sbiadire o deteriorarsi. Inoltre, l'assenza di emissione IR significa che i LED non scaldano gli oggetti illuminati, un vantaggio importante in vetrine, musei e ambienti climatizzati.
L'attacco E27 (Edison 27mm) è il formato grande, il più diffuso in Italia, usato nella maggior parte dei lampadari, delle plafoniere e delle lampade da tavolo. L'attacco E14 (Edison 14mm), detto anche "mignon" o "a candela", è il formato piccolo, utilizzato tipicamente nei lampadari decorativi, nelle abat-jour e nelle applique di dimensioni contenute. La differenza è esclusivamente nel diametro della filettatura: le prestazioni luminose possono essere equivalenti a parità di wattaggio.
