Let’s start with clarifying what the word COB means. COB, in the field of lighting, stands for Chip-On-Board and refers to the structure of the chips of the LED strip. 

In the image on the right, there is a traditional LED strip, so-called SMD. These types of strips are composed of small LED chips spaced a few millimeters, which make the beam of light bright but uneven. 

Given their shape and thickness, the LED strips can be easily attached even by inexperienced hands, thanks to the adhesive back.

The COB LED strips, which are a bit like the bigger brothers of the SMD LEDs, instead of having only one chip at a time, have so many tied together as if they were a unique light. The whole thing is fixed on a kind of plate, which can be made of aluminum or ceramic. This pot is a small area and can hold numerous chips. 

The interesting thing is that, although there are so many chips, COB LEDs only have a small electrical structure, so they are easier to operate than SMD LEDs.
